Moppin' Up Maui

This is Chenoa, one of our investigators in Laie.
One last night with the Miyasaki's.

Dang this week was nuts!!  Again so much has happened that I can’t even explain, it’s so crazy.  Glad to hear that everyone is doing good though!  I can’t believe that you going to Lake Powell this week.  It seems like we were all there the other day.  How much time does Brett have left on his mission?  Sounds like school and work is going good.  That’s cool that Sam is just deciding to stick with golf.  At least he will be able to play golf the rest of his life.  Benjee you’re a stud bro!  I wish I could watch your games so bad, good thing next year I’ll be home just in time to watch you play freshman soccer!  Keep practicing hard and you'll be the best in no time!  Sam keep practicing golf too.  I’m sure you’re already way better than me... dang!  Oh well, you'll have to give me pointers when I get home.  You know what’s crazy?  On Friday I hit my year mark.  It’s soooo crazy I’ve been out this long and the time just keeps going by faster and faster.  After Friday I can officially say that I have less than a year left.
This is Will, he's way tight!
This is George.  We re-activated him.
So Maui is awesome!  I love it so much its kind of weird actually,  many parts of this island remind me of Arizona so its actually really cool.  There is only one zone in Maui and it actually covers two other islands as well, Lanai and Molokai so we actually get to take the ferry to those islands and go on exchanges!  Pretty neat huh?  All the islands are a little different.  Maui is pretty dry and hot but they have some pretty sweet places here like Kihei and Lahaina.  The area I cover is the smallest area in the zone; it’s all Hawaiian homes.  Yeah, Elder Carrel is my comp.  He’s tight!  Yeah, he totally called that we were going to be companions in the mission.  We get along great and he and Elder Mortensen were the ones that I would get along with the best.  We’re going to have a lot of fun this transfer for sure!  Our goal for September is 20 baptisms and I’m sure we will make it!  Zone Leader is crazy though, we have so much stuff to do and it sometimes makes me feel like were not being diligent because we have to take care of other stuff and we don’t have as much time to go and work.  I don’t get to bed on time either because were always doing stuff, so I’m always tired.  One cool thing though is that we always have to be excited and pump up the zone so were always yelling and screaming and stuff to get the zone stoked on reaching the high water mark.  The ward and area I’m in is called Waiehu.  The members are awesome!  I had no difficulty fitting in, it almost felt natural to be around them and talk with them even though I’m brand new.  Maybe I’m just used to switching wards so its not that big of a deal anymore?  We had a lot of good things happen these past couple days.  So when I came into the zone the whole zone only had 5 with a baptismal date and since yesterday it moved up to 13!  Elder Carrel and I saw a bunch of miracles yesterday in our area.  It was crazy yesterday a bunch of members had people for us to teach so we got 3 new investigators yesterday and we committed one to baptism and she has a date for the 15th!  We also have another lesson today with a guy that some members wanted us to teach yesterday so we'll probably commit him to baptism today!  Dang, I truly know that the Lord is blessing me.  None of this would have happened if it weren't for him.  His hand is definitely in my life.  It’s great!  Maybe, because I left Laie with 3 about to be baptized?  So everything is great!  Maui is awesome, the zone is tight, I can’t complain really haha.
This was at our lesson yesterday, Amanda is on the left.  She's the one that we committed to baptism on the 15th.  Her friend Olivia is on the right, she is in our ward.
Sounds like Blue Ridge will dominate again this year.  It seems like sports just took off right after I graduated.  Oh yeah, I have a dentist appointment tomorrow so hopefully it will go smoothly.  Hey mom look up the scripture Ether 12:40 it goes good with that scripture you sent me:)  Well, have fun at Lake Powell!  You guys are so lucky, make sure you take lots of pictures for me.  Remember last year at this time you sent me Lake Powell pictures except I was in Hilo?  Crazy.  Oh yeah quick story, so the other day Elder Carrel and I were driving to see this unbaptized kid on our list, but they live way at the edge of our area and we were going on this really, really windy road that was along the cliff and I made the mistake of looking through the area book during the drive... yeah I got car sick bad!  I never threw up though.  I just told him to pull over and I needed a long break of fresh air haha it was bad!  Well I love you all the most and have a bomb week!
Me and Elder Carrel when I got car sick!

Waiehu, Maui

Waiehu is on the north shore of Maui and has the Church's first chapel in Hawaii that is still in use today.  Maui is known as a tourist destination for those who want a Hawaii experience but not the huge touristy population.  Location can be seen by the green star in the pic below...

Get In the Zone - Maui Zone!

China Man's Hat
Some really cool valley

Dang this week has been jam packed full of so many awesome things that it will blow your mind!  First off though, it’s great to hear that everyone is doing well with everything.  Ben is a stud in soccer.  Guarantee he will be better than me then when I was in high school.  I am proud of him.  Its good to hear that Sam is doing good, well except for the nerve problems and the eating.  That’s really cool that he is thinking about golf instead of baseball, not saying that baseball is lame or anything, but I can see him going far in golf.  Speaking of golf we actually went golfing today for the last time at Kahuku, the junk course by the ocean haha, it was fun. I feel like I’m getting a lot better with everything except for my drives.  I can’t drive at all!  Also, I got letters from the Sargents and Joey was telling me how he is the best in the region and one of the best in the state.  What a stud!  Glad to hear that surgeries are going well and that mom is continuing to be the best mom in the world.
Elders Johnson, Menlove and Bowlby at Kahuku Golf Course
So we got transfer calls last night and I’m leaving!  After 6 months in Laie, I’m finally leaving haha.  It actually is really kind of bittersweet because I really came to love this area and all the people in this area and in the wards that I served in.  It’s a bummer because so many good things started happening right when transfers came up.  Typical in missionary work.  So I’m getting transferred to Maui!  How sick is that?!  Maui I heard is like the tightest place ever!  The Lord is truly blessing me by sending me to Laie and then to Maui!  Not only am I just getting transferred there, I also got called to be a Zone Leader over there.  I’m going to be companions with Elder Carrel that came out with me.  I don’t know if you remember him but we were in the MTC together.  I’m soooo stoked about that!  We’ll be zone leaders together.  I leave on Wednesday so next email to you will have updates and pictures of Maui!  So yeah the baptism that we had scheduled for last Saturday fell through... I was super bummed.  He still wants to be baptized and stuff but he cancelled both lessons we had last week, and I think that they are still trying to work out some legal issues since he is a foster kid.  Guarantee he will get baptized in a couple weeks, same with Aygee (the one who had a dream that Elder Bowlby and I baptized her) and maybe Chenoa.  So yeah so many great things are happening right now in this area and I’m leaving it... oh well.
Michele, our investigator
Sherif, our investigator
Aygee, our investigator
So yeah fire knives, Jay (guy in singles ward) showed us how to fire knife dance so I have some pretty sick pictures that I’ll send you on that.
These pics are of me fire dancing with my fire knives

I’ve had a lot of food this week!  I’m still sitting pretty steady at 175 lbs so I’m not that skinny son that you used to have haha.  Speaking of food, Mom I wanted to tell you a little secret on homemade bread that you should try.  So when you make it, instead of using regular milk, use coconut milk, it tastes sooo good!  Also we went to a bbq last week with one of our members, Will.  We had so much food, and he invited all his friends from work.  I got to talking with one of his friends and found out he was from St. George and I was like hey, I used to live there.  So we started talking and he asked me If I had ever seen Sand Hollow pool and I was like yeah my dad used to work there, and he’s like "who’s your dad?" I said "Dirk Gardner" he said "No way!  I know your dad when he was here but then you guys moved to Show Low right?"  So yeah, his name is Kaleb Gibson.  Do you know him dad?  We went to another Luau on Saturday with our singles ward and we helped make the Umu and prepare the Otai, then we came back and feasted!  It was the best Luau I’ve ever been to!
Making the Umu
I husked this coconut myself!
The Luau feast! I'm a stiff Haole who has a hard time sitting Indian style!
I can’t believe Kade is already home!?  Did you know he was Carson's ZL in Texas?  Man that was fast!  And Brad also?  That’s crazy!  Dang all those girls from our ward like Jess, and Melanie are already in college?!  Dude, that’s weird!  I was thinking they were on their senior year or something... Holy cow that’s nuts! So I just finished reading the Doctrine and Covenants.  Man, I got to say that I love the scriptures sooooo much!  I've never learned so much in my life then by reading the scriptures!  D&C is amazing!  So many great things in that book.  So now I’ve read everything except the Old Testament on my mission.  I’ve finished the Book of Mormon, New Testament, D&C, and the Pearl of Great Price.  I’m super close to finishing Jesus the Christ.  I only have a couple of chapters left.  That’s also an amazing book!  Jam packed full of great things!  I remember dad telling me that he read it on his mission so I had to read it on mine.  Well that’s pretty much all that has happened this week.  A lot of stuff it’s been crazy!  I heard that Elder Limb is on Maui so that would make me zone leader over my trainer... that will be weird... So yeah, I’ll probably just go to the dentist in Maui so if you could just put some money on my card because I don’t think I have that much.  I'll just go to the dentist there.

Well I love you all so much and I look forward to hearing about your week and all the great things that happen.  Love you the most!

How Am I Doing?

I am doing great!  This week was a bomb week, a lot of stuff happened which was great!  Sounds to me like everyone is staying busy back at home and school and work is also going great!  Hawaiian Haystacks - haha that’s funny, yeah that’s not even known over here.  I tell people that I used to eat Hawaiian haystacks and they just laugh.  I don’t know who invented that but I think the only reason they would call it Hawaiian is because of the pineapples.  My tooth is actually doing a lot better also, it doesn’t really hurt anymore.  I can stop by a dentist but there aren’t really any here in Laie, and I don’t know how much it costs because the mission medical doesn’t cover the dentist.  Dang, I can’t believe you are going to Lake Powell again you are so lucky!!  Yeah, I would love to come back here and show you around and do all the things that I couldn’t do before, and plus its the winter so the north shore will be poppin’.  The waves are HUGE in the winter.
Me, Michele (our investigator) and Elder Bowlby
So yeah this week was sick!  We taught a bunch of lessons this week!  We almost had 20 lessons but it came out to be 18.  Our investigators that we have right now are golden!  We have 4 solid investigators.  One of them is getting baptized on the 18th so that’s right before transfers so I’ll have 2 baptisms for August!  I know that the other ones will probably end up getting baptized but it will probably be when I leave... which is a bummer that I can’t see them all the way through but hey at least they are going to make it there.  Thursday was awesome!  President Dalton came up and we all went to the PCC and we went to prime dining and then hit up the Night Show after that.  The Night Show was incredible!  When you guys come here we have to go to the night show for sure!  That’s like a must!  I got lucky and saw it early in my mission but I’ll still get to see it one more time at the end of my mission.  That’s what you get when you double your high water mark haha.  Elder Bowlby and I are in the process of making a fire knife.  Some of the members in our singles ward are helping us make one then we will spin it on Friday night and we'll get some pictures.  Its going to look sick!!
Right before we went into prime dining.  Ive gained like 20 pounds i weigh 175 now haha
Two show people and Elder Sheranian
This guy was like the main actor dude at PCC
So yesterday it was super weird!  We have this investigator that we just got and we had only taught him once and we didn’t really get to know him but yesterday we were trying to get to know him, so we followed up with the reading assignment that we left him which was to read 1 verse everyday and he was like "Yeah man, I actually have been reading everyday"  We were like holy cow that’s awesome!  So we were asking about his family and stuff and he told us his dad’s side are all members but his moms side is "Community of Christ".  So we asked him what that was and he was like, well let me show you.  So he brings out this book and all it says on the cover is "Holy Scriptures" and I was like ok a Bible.  I turned to look on the spine of the book and I was shocked!  It said the Bible, The Book of Mormon and the Doctrine and Covenants.  Dude, the guy was RLDS or "Community of Christ".  They believe everything that we do except they branched off when Brigham Young became prophet and they have their own prophet named like president Villi or something and they also believe women can hold the priesthood... They followed Emma Smith and her sons... it was nuts!  I was like shoot, well we were going to actually teach you the restoration, but since you already believe in it then never mind haha.  So that was my crazy story for the week.  Hey I have a question mom, you know the blanket you made me?  I still use it but I kind of need to wash it.  How do I go about doing that?  Dang, everything is going so good right now its amazing!  I’m so happy with everything that is going on its great.  I’ve never been sick once on my mission.  I haven’t gotten sick in like 2 or 3 years its awesome!  I really feel like I’m going to be transferred though.  Like I’m almost positive that I am, but that’s alright I’m kind of ready to move on but kind of sad that I’m leaving so much great stuff behind... I guess that’s the way it goes though...
Elder Bowlby and myself after teaching a lesson
With an investigator.  Notice the house with a complete open wall.  No way to lock this house!
Elder Bowlby writing a letter while I am writing my testimony in a Book of Mormon for our investigator.
Well that’s about it for me this week.  It was a bomb week!  We are about to go to Kualoa Ranch and do some movie tours so ill be able to let you know how that goes next week and also I’ll be able to let you know if I’m getting transferred or not and probably if I’m going to be a ZL so yeah its going to be crazy!  Sorry Emmi and Hal I cant write you back right now because I got to bounce but I love you both, you are both studs!  Have a great week and I love you the most!  Laterzz

Cute Story from Local Member

Hi, I found out I sent you thumbnails instead of the actual picture. I am not very good with computers!!!! If you want the pictures I can send them. My husband said they come up small and you might not be able to see them very good. Let me know. Sorry!
Beau really is a great missionary. Cute story...  our ward had a swim party at the BYU-H pool last Saturday. The elders came for the dinner we had after swimming. They were really tired and had had a long day but instead of resting Beau got up, found a tennis ball from a nearby court and went and played catch with the kids. They were so happy to have someone play ball with them. He is doing such a good job here! I am so impressed with him and how hard he is working and always being such a good missionary.   Hope you had a fun vacation!

Mega Freaking Chill

Those pictures were dope of all of you at Carlsbad.  I want to go there so bad!  Actually, I was thinking about it and the only place I want to go is Lake Powell.  That’s like my favorite place ever!  All of you are growing up so fast, jeeze!  Sam is going to be a sophomore and Ben in 8th grade?!  Ahh, that’s so weird to think that next year he'll be in high school but at least I’ll be home to watch his games and stuff.  Wow, Jacob Carter is almost home?  That went by soo fast!  You'll have to let me know how he has changed and stuff that should be interesting.  Well, school has already started over here, they start early over here, so be grateful that you have an extra week to cruise.  haha Jojo looks sooo funny when she is all swollen ha dang, CLASSIC.
Elder Johnson
-Dinner with the Keithleys (they are a newlywed couple, they remind me of Hal and Emmi)
This week was bomb!  A lot of good things happened this week.  On Tuesday we went on exchanges.  I went with Elder Johnson in his area and Elder Bowlby went with Elder Menlove in ours.  It was cool being with Elder Johnson, he taught me a lot of good things.  He also taught me how to write songs so I’m starting to write some songs right now so when I get home I can just jam.  A lot of good things happened when Elder Bowlby was in our area.  They taught a new investigator in the Samoan ward that wants to be baptized!  His name is Alika and we’re going to try and baptize him on the 18th right before transfers!  They also taught Michele.  I don’t know if you remember me talking about her but they taught her and she was just a brick wall.  She wasn’t receptive at all.  She was almost anti in some of the comments she was making so that was a bummer.  They set up another appointment with her for Sunday so I’ll tell you about that lesson in just a bit.  Wed, Thur, and Fri were pretty normal not too much happened but Saturday we had a baptism!!  Chance got baptized!  I was stoked about that.  Everything went well.  His cousin baptized him and had to do it like 7 times because he wasn’t saying the prayer right haha and he also got confirmed after the baptism which doesn’t usually happen but he wanted to because he didn’t want to get up in front of everyone on Sunday and do it, he's really shy and plus his family insisted on it.  Everything was great though.
Me, Chance, and Elder Bowlby at Chance's baptism
We went to 2 parties on Saturday also, it was tight!  I had so much food but it was a lot of fun.  Everyone has parties here its ridiculous!  There not just little small parties but they're huge!  With all the food you can imagine.  Oh yeah I forgot to tell you about this one investigator that we have.  His name is Shareef.  He grew up in Egypt and moved over here and has been here ever since.  He's into trading commodities and that’s how he makes his money.  Anyways the way we found him was by service tracting last transfer and we have been meeting him on and off ever since.  This last week we had 2 really good visits with him.  He always tells us that he can only meet with us for like 10 min. but we stay over there for like 2 hours haha.  It’s really good though because we’re able to get to know him and his likes and background and stuff.  He really likes us now and considers us his good friends.  He told us that he really likes how we’re so positive in our church and he wants to be around more positive people.  Long story short, we gave him a Book of Mormon and he said he would read and he said that he wanted to come to church!  When we followed up with him the other day we asked if he had read and he was like yeah just a little I only read 25 pages...  We were both like HECK YA!  That’s awesome!  You can barely get members to read that much sometimes!  He said that once he read everything started going good on his trading!  He's golden!  So back to Sunday - Sunday was awesome!  I guess they are splitting all the singles wards and BYU ward and making them all singles wards and all the boundaries are changing.  It’s supposed to happen the 26th or something, transfers are the 22nd.. Whew! Dodged that hurricane haha that’s going to be crazy!  We taught Michele on Sunday and I was expecting to go in and have her be full of attitude and anti-Mormon comments but it wasn’t really like that.  We showed her the Safety for the Soul talk by Jeffery R. Holland and the spirit was sooo strong during the lesson and then we both just bore our testimonies.  It was kind of like a do or die lesson, she either accepts it and we continue teaching her or she shows no interest and we drop her.  She said she still wants to read the Book of Mormon and that she had actually highlighted some verses and stuff so it was sick!  There’s still a chance for Michele!  Alright so last miracle I want to tell you.  In the singles ward there is this guy named Ka'i.  He's the Sunday School president and he works for the airlines and he met this girl named Aygee at work.  She's Philippino, and he ended up giving her a Book of Mormon and she read it in like 3 months.  The only nutty thing is she lives in Honolulu, but she still comes to our ward because she has all of her friends in our ward.  We've been wanting to teach her the lessons but its been crazy lately with her working and stuff, but we just got a call today from Ka'i saying that she has been doing really good and she had a really spiritual experience in which she had a dream that she got baptized and that me and Elder Bowlby were there!!! How crazy is that!  So were going to try and get her baptized on the 18th.  So we could have 2 baptisms on the 18th!  I’m stoked!  Everything is so good right now, I love it!  That’s about all the good stuff that happened this week.
My camera can do this!
Well, I just wanted to wish Mom a happy birthday!  I love you so much mom!  You’re the best mom in the whole world.  You’re like the definition of a "Missionary Mom".  I’m going to be sending a package home pretty soon of stuff that I’ve collected so you can just go through it and stuff.  I heard this quote yesterday and I really liked it, it goes: "Don’t cry because its over, smile because it happened".  Well, I love you all so much and thanks for the pictures!  Keep sending more.

Love you the most
